It depends on what kind of e-mail account or service you are using with
Outlook.
For example, if you use Outlook with POP3/SMTP account, all your mail,
contacts, appointment, etc. are stored locally with Personal Folder (PST
file).
However, if you use Outlook with Exchange mail account, most likely your
mails are stored on the Exchange server database unless you change the
delivery location from mailbox to Personal Folder (PST file). With
Exchange mail account, even though you have mail delivery to your mailbox,
you can still backup your mail to Personal Folder (PST file) locally on
your machine.
