When VPN connects, explorer hangs for a few minutes

Hi,

A number of travelling workers of one of my clients regularly use PPTP based
VPN connections, through an ISA server back to the office. They tend to use
the hibernate function on the windows XP based notebooks extensively, and
this is a habit, they will not change, and a combination of wireless
broadband cards, client networks, public wireless access points and dial up
connections to be able to reach the office to access files / update client
details in the CRM package, and access e-mail.

They are regularly seeing the notebooks freeze when the VPN connects or
disconnects for periods of several minutes, the mouse works, but explorer
seems to just go into sleep mode, clicking on any desktop icons tey refuse
to open, clicking on START, again the normal XP start menu does not appear.
Then XP wakes up several minutes later, and then behave quite normally.

Any suggestions, on a cause / solution ?

("Don't use hibernate" is not going to cut it, that practice is firmly
entrenched in the culture of the company.)

Try using sysinternals: defrag system file at system startup.

Note: sysinternals has been bought by Microsoft
