When should I use .docm?

Hi,

We have several Word templates that we regularly use for outgoing
correspondence. The templates contain a number of macros. The documents are
stored in an electronic document management system (EDMS), which doesn't
allow us to specify whether to use .docx or .docm when saving documents.
Looking at the EDMS data files on the server, (which are saved with a
reference number e.g. C0012456.docx) it does support both formats but I'm
not sure when it uses one over the other.

We are having trouble when re-opening documents from within the EDMS. The
macros still appear to work, but all data stored in DocVariables is
scrambled.

When using templates containing macros and DocVariables, in which format
should they be saved, .docx or .docm?

Thanks,

John

Macros may only be stored in dot, dotm, doc and docm formats.
There was a bug in a recent Word 2007 update that caused docvariables to be
scrambled. It has been addressed by a hotfix

Thanks for that. I downloaded the patch and tried to apply it to a computer
running Office 2007 SP2 but it came up with the following error:

"The expected version of the product was not found on the system."

What version of Word is it looking for then if not Word 2007?

The relevant file versions to which the hotfix applies are listed at the end

Sorry. I must be misreading the article. I read in the article that there
are no prerequisites for the Hotfix and I assumed the file information at
the end were the new files installed by the Hotfix, not the files the Hotfix
requires before it will install on a computer.

If the latter is the case, and since I already have Office 2007 SP2
installed, will Microsoft Update bring these computers to the stage where
the Hotfix can be applied? I'll try that in the morning and see if that
works.

Thanks for your help,

John

Applied all Office patches and reran the HotFix. Installed OK and fixed the
issue I was having.

Thank you very much for your help.
