When off the network, laptops run very slow

Hello;

Most of the users here are having the same problem. If they disconnect from
the network (ie, go home, or work from home.) Their laptops will run slow.
One user told me that if she goes to open a word document, it could take as
long as 35 seconds before it will allow her to modify text.

I was told by another user that about every 15 minutes, the computer will
dramatically slow down.

The laptops are Dell Inspiron 8600, and 1100's w/ windows xp SP2. We are
running roaming profiles, on a Windows 2000 server. I believe this problem
may have been going on a while, I just wasnt informed.

Any help or suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Thank You;

I had the same issue for awhile. but after a domain upgrade to 2003 server
there is no longer that problem.

I believe (don't hold me to it, i can't remember for sure) that in the GP
(group policy) there is a setting for how Roaming User profiles are loaded.
I believe you can tell it to load the RUP all the way, or to load and update
files as needed. I think that when you are dis-connected from the network,
and the domain, it makes several attempts to load each of these files before
giving up and loading the local copy. This, i believe is causing the
slowdown.

In short:
Check group policy, and see how Roaming User Profiles are loaded.
