WHEN LOOKING AT HTML EMAILS OUTLOOK HANGS

G

Outlook hangs (not responding) and needs to be closed each time I access a
HTML email. Message box reads "View Temp Files"error.

The exact error reads 'Outlook could not create the work file. Check the temp
environment variable.'This also happens when Word 07 is started.

Do all the values in the following registry key start with %userprofile%?
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User
Shell Folders

If not, which aren't?

That's good.

Are you running on Windows XP or Windows Vista?
I assume you are also working with Outlook 2007?
Does it work when you logon as a different user?

What do you see for output when you open a DOS shell and run:

echo %temp%

Does that path exist?

Works fine as a guest not administrator.

How do I access the below info on my PC??

Re: Error message:Outlook could not create the work file
Comment Was this post helpful ? Reply Quote

OK, slightly weird. I ran a repair of O2K7 which ended with an error because
drive W: was not present. Now drive W: is the letter I have assigned to a USB
120Gb disk I use for backups etc. but it was present when I did the original
installation. On a hunch, I plugged it back in and it all started working
again. There's more to do here - need to scan the registry, for example.
Also, I'll try a uninstall and reinstall without W: attached. If that cures
it then we have more clue about what's going on.

BUT - this isn't the first time I've found MS using inappropriate drives to
store stuff. I find the MSXML temp folder on USB thumb drives and also on the
W: drive. If I find it on attached network shares which are mapped I'm going
to be really quite cross. Looks to me, right now, like there is some very
poor code checking where to put stuff and the solution for now is not to have
it attached when installing new programs OR MS updates.

I'll keep you posted and let me know if you find that you might have the
same problem occurring here.

Good luck!
UPDATE: I FOUND IT!
Question - do you have a Western Digital external hard drive? Do you use the
WDSync program? Have you enabled "Secure Browsing"? Have you shut down
without DISabling it?

You have? Then you, like me, have overwritten several registry keys in:
HKCU/Software/Microsoft/Windows/Current Version/Explorer/Shell Folders.
Specifically Cache, but also History, Cookies and Favourites. Set these back
to the defaults in Local Settings on your hard disk and reboot. Bob's your
uncle! All fixed.
