I have always kept my version of windows fully upto date, including loading
SP2 etc. etc. However i have had to repair my windows, using the original
Dell supplied XP disc. Now, Microsoft.com tells me that i have SP2
installed, but will not let me download either IE7 beta3 or the latest
version of defender, because i do not have SP2 installed DOHHHHHHHH

Any suggestions

Thanks

Andrew

Hi,

It's a known flaw of a repair installation that the system thinks that
service packs and hotfixes are still installed. Visit WindowsUpdate and you
will find that they are not. You will need to reinstall them (SP2 and the
subsequent updates).

While a repair is not supposed to write-over system files of
later (or newer) date, it does happen. At this point, the later
version has become corrupted. When installing applications, the
installer looks for both the date of key files and its size. If
there is a mismatch in the information, then it will declare it.
IOW, that it confirms that SP2 had been altered.

What Repair Install does to put your system to state Zero based on what
is on the CD (not what is on your HD). Therefore, if your CD is pre
SP2, or SP1, then you will need to install SP2 again and then do a
Windows update to get all the patches since SP2.

Hope this helps.

Hi Andrew,

Yeah, windows is in pretty bad shape. Why not buck the system and try
something different? You can download any of the live-cd versions of Linux
and see how you like them. My favorite is UBUNTO folowed by KNOPPIX. One by
one I am converting all my windows friends. Usually it's a snap, right
after they re-install window for the millionth time...

Well, then I have 1 million reinstalls to go. Of course, I have only been
using Windows since v 3.1. It broke because the harddrive crashed. I'll
bet that Linux won't survive a harddrive crash.
