When I type in my exchange server name, it changes it to something else?

I'm using Outlook 2003 (office 2003 pro) with exchange5.5.
When I configure my outlook client with the proper
exchange server info, it changes it automatically to a
fully qualified domain name. How do I prevent this from
happening? How do I make it accept either the servers
name or ip address? Also, if I type in the Class C ip of
my server, it also changes automatically to the fully
qualified domain name.

Any suggestions?
TIA
Jim

What is the issue in Outlook resolving the FQDN?

For some reason the email client changes the exchange
server name from nvheathorn01 to
nvheathorn01.nvheathorn.com OR it changes it from it's
private IP (class C) to nvheathorn01.nvheathorn.com that
resolves to a public IP. How can I get it to accept the
servers local ip without it changing it to a FQDN?
Thanks.

You can't and actually it doesn't matter as in both cases the same route is
taken. If you ping the FQDN does it return the public address? If so you a
DNS configuration issue.
