When I open my scanned photos they appear too small.

When I open my scanned photos they appear exactly as they would on the
scanner, as a tiny rectangle in the upper corner of the scanner's field. The
crop button is not activated nor is the option to increase size.

When I open my scanned photos they appear exactly as they would on the
scanner, as a tiny rectangle in the upper corner of the scanner's field. The
crop button is not activated nor is the option to increase size.
 
It is strongly recommended that you not insert pictures directly from your
scanner into your presentation. The scanner's software is usually
configurable enough to be able to limit the scan field, and adjust for
color, resolution, and such.

Instead, try using the scanner's software to save image files to the HD,
then insert the image files.

How are you opening them in PowerPoint?
If not by using Insert, Picture, From File, you should generally do it that way.
Try that first, let us know how it works out.
