When I double-click a folder it always opens a new window

In XP Pro , when I double-click a folder it always opens a new window,
instead of expanding the tree in windows explorer. I end up having tons of
windows open and it slows me down, trying to find the correct window after a
while.

I changed the obvious setting in Explorer | Folder Options | Browse Folders
but that didn't work.
Then I tried to change the File types for folder and file like in Windows
2000 (you know the N/A extension and Folder or was it File Folder) but they
don't work in XP.

Any ideas? thanks.

Jake,

Folder Options (General tab) applet in Control Panel has a setting which
determines how folders are opened. You need to select the Open each folder
in the same window option. If that option is already selected, then use the
REG file available here: http://windowsxp.mvps.org/samewindow.htm

I found this link as well:
http://www.annoyances.org/exec/forum/winxp/t1082711793

It seems like a bug. I think I will try these 4 recomendations in order
first and then merge your registry settings as the 4th option, sound
correct?

1) Locate the Default value under the following key in the registry:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell Type NONE in the File data box, click OK,
and exit the registry editor.

2) cheers gary, found that a big help, one thing i should add, if garys fix
doesn't entirely work, u might also want to also try changing the default
value in HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Drive\shell to NONE .

3) What worked for me is
Value Data in the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Folder\shell string -change to
explore... mine was set at open. Works good now

4) <I'll merge your registry download Ramesh>

I tried all this and nothing worked. I finally found a quick fix easy
solution. All you need to do is get into someones computer that has folder
options working as you want it to then go to registry, export and email the
following registry keys to yourself: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory and
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Folder. All you need to do then is add these keys to your
registry by double clicking on them. I hope this helps, coz it fixed it for
me and I tried everything before that. This should save you a lot of
time.:)

Regarding point #4: The REG file in my site does the same as you stated,
plus fixes two other things.

Two other things? Are you able to reveal these things or should I just
blindly install this on my computer :)

Thanks by the way.

..REG files are simply viewable using Notepad. You don't need to blindly run
it.

I did check them out but they were a bit complicated.

I tried your solution first actually as it appeared that all the other
advice I read was in that file I downloaded (after backing up the registry)
and it worked perfectly.

Thank you very much!
