When I delete email, I still see it in the reading pane. Why?

I delete the emails, and they go into the deleted items folder, but I still
see them in the reading pane, marked "Deleted Items" under the In Folder
heading. This was not the case before. What changed?

unsolicited mail sent to my personal account will be deleted without
reading.

After furious head scratching, Confundido asked:
