When I add a field to the table and click save it does not retain

I have a table that when i add a new field name it does not retain it. When
I try to add it back in it tells me that field is in use. How do I clean
this up or fix the issue
 
uh-oh! Sounds like your indexing or one of your system tables is corrupt.
Have you tried compacting the database?
