When higlighting to delete, the status bar reads--Delete Block? N.

I am using Word 2003, and lately when I highlight a word(s) and press the
delete on my keyboard I receive a message in my status bar that reads:

Delete Block? No (yes).

How can I turn off this feature, so that I can simply press delete, to
remove unwanted text?
