When someone buys a new computer micrsoft works, word and powerpoint should
be free, because of the price we pay for the computer. Not just 60 days. At
least a year free. That is my suggestion. I can't afford to buy it after
buying the computer, and the monitor, then 60 days later they want us to buy
the powerpoint and the norton virus protection. (Can you say rip-off)

Wow. Way to run to the defense of the software...

Before you simply reverse the question and put the onus on him for an
explanation, maybe you should try to answer why Microsoft and other software
vedors don't offer better solutions for people who have tighter budgets.

Then, if you manage to explain that, you can ask your question.

art.

What you said can be taken either way

If you think of a computer as a car, software is the gas that runs it.

Both the car and gas manufacturers have to make a buck somehow. The car dealer may
give you a free tankfull to get you started, but you don't expect to be able to
come back for free refills.

Similarly, the computer manufacturer gives you a free "tankfull" of software to try
out. The software ("gas") manufacturer probably gets nothing for this other than a
way to get you interested in their wares. If you like it, you may buy it. If not,
you can skip it.

When you think about it, it's not a bad alternative to the way things used to be
... you'd buy the computer and buy the software to go with it. No free trials, and
once you opened the box, it was yours. Easier to turn back an ice age than to get
a refund if you just didn't like the software.

Is it true that Microsoft announced that we are allowed to purchase OEM
version of Windows XP (home or professional) without buying the PC? Is this
for good or just for a short period?

Any comments?

Some vendors will sell OEM Windows copies with another hardware purchase. Whether this
is OK with Microsoft or not, I don't know.

Steve,

I was told by one vendor that **only about a month ago**, Micorsoft made the
announcement that one can buy just the OEM version of Windows without buying
any hardward whatsoever. This is because Microsoft wants to encourage users
to use **genuine** software. So far, this has been hearsay. I would love to
see the announcement. Since the MVP's are closer to Microsoft, I wonder if
any of you has heard anything

You might want to ask in one of the Windows-specific groups. We are but humble
