When I create anything on the page, once I save the page the "design,
code, split, preview" options are gone. When I open another page they are
there but once the page is saved I can only make changes in HTML which is
there. I may have changed something in the program to cause this but I do
not know what. The tool bar is even withdrawn and grayed making it
unaccessible. HELP.

Find and delete cmdui.prf in Windows Explorer

Then try the usual repairs in the sequence below:
1) In Windows Explorer Find and delete all FP Temp Files
Usually in C:\WINDOWS\Temp and %USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Temp
- in FP 2003 you need to look in the super hidden folder
%USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\FrontPageTempDir
2) In Windows Explorer Find and delete all hidden *.web files
Usually in %USERPROFILE%\Application Data\Microsoft\Web Server Extensions\Cache
3) Run a Repair on IE
(see http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=318378 )
4) Install all Service Packs for your OS, IE, MS Office and your Video card
(Windows Update and Office Update sites, plus your video card supplier site)
5) Open FP and Disable or Uninstall any FP Addins,
6) Open your FP Web/Site and run a Tools Recalculate Hyperlinks

Hi Stefan + all,

I also have the same problem with Frontpage 2003. It worked well for few
weeks (just got it...) but started acting up last week.

The problem is with ASP pages on Frontpage web. If I make new blank page and
save it with .asp extension, the design/split/code/preview disappears.

If I save similar blank page outside Frontpage web, for example to
C:\temp\new_page_1.asp the design/split/code/preview works normally.

I've tried this with several disk + web based frontpage webs, so the problem
is probably with the FP client rather than with the FP server extensions.

I also tried your tips but they did not help. I also reinstalled the FP 2003.

Any other ideas? At present condition the software is as pretty useless.

Many thanks,

Simo

I have no problem opening .asp page or any pages (in or out of webs) and seeing all views
Have you run ALL the repairs in my above post (including IE)
Also check that you have the latest graphics driver for your PC/OS

PS
..ASP pages should only be opened in server based webs (not disc based or from temp folders)

Hi Stefan,

You're lucky have all the views ;-) I also had all the needed views for the
couple of the first weeks.

I ran all the repairs on your list. I iinstalled the SP4 (running windows
2000) + security patches + IE 6 repair + IE 6 SP1 reinstall, latest SP for
the Office and the video drivers.

Best regards,

Simo

I'm having the same trouble. I just bought a new computer and updated to
FP2003. Now I can't design a darned thing and wished I would never have
purchased it. I uninstalled FP and tried reinstalling, now I'm getting
errors on the reinstall. ugh!

Normally that means that you have made an error in the code in HTML view
that FP can't render. Post it somewhere so we can check the page for
you.

Hi Jens and Pat,

Did you manage to get the FP 2003 working? I had to downgrade back to FP
2000.

Luckily I have upgrade sets from 98 -> 2000 -> 2003, so there's at least
some version that's working =)

Best regards,

Simo

Reinstall FP 2003.
With FrontPage closed, find and delete a file named Cmdui.prf and then see if it's fixed.

Hi Steve,

I noticed strange phenomenon that might help to track the problem.

I have one disc based web and opened an ASP page with Windows File
explorer (File -> Edit). Then the views were available.

But when I opened the page using FrontPage the views were gone again.
Strange?

To illustrate this and for example web based Frontpage web I made few
screenshots. Please see: http://hahtala.com/fp/

Any ideas how to fix this problem?

Many thanks,

Simo

First of all http://hahtala.com is not a disc based web, it's a server based web (running the FP SE under what appears to be a
Windows Server so ASP should be supported
Secondly never open a local IIS server based web (in your C:\Inetpub) as a disc based web, or FP may no longer see it as a server
based web
Always open it in FP as http://localhost or http://machinename

Check that you have FP set as the default editor (Open as Html option) for .asp pages in Tools Options Configure Editors

Hi Stefan,

1. If you really read the screenshot page, the title for the
hahtala.com screenshots was "Web based FrontPage web". Below that were
the samples of the disc spaced web.

2. I know the issues with the disc spaced webs (c:\inetpub). I'm still
using that on my personal workstation (windows 2000). If I would use
it as web based and use web browser to test the pages I would run into
"too many simultaneous users" error. The personal version of IIS has
limited user sessions.. So it's not usable on workstation. I prefer
to create and test the pages on local PC rather than on the live
server.

But.. Your editor tip helped! :-) I did check that also earlier on
(when the problem occurred the first time). So perhaps deleting of the
Cmdui.prf might have resetted the settings?

Many thanks!

Simo
