What's this all about?

Thanks in advance.

A friend has a router and two XP boxes. Both machines have trouble going to
certain sites. They can go to google.com, and lycos.com but will stall at
microsoft.com, excite.com and kidscook.com. It's appears to be random. I
have looked at all the settings on the router, uninstalled Norton, checked
the DNS servers and checked security settings. They are both using IE6 and
one of them is a new (2 months old) Dell 8300. The sites that they stall
out on will time out if I ping it.

I'm stumped.

DSL or cable?
DSL is usually less reliable than cable especially at
distance from the CO. cable may have issue with a number
of users at dense area/pop.

check the NAT / PAT settings of the router.
And test the tru thru put by doing download and upload
tests. Also hit a internet connect speed test webpage.
look one up on google.com

Thanks for the reply. It is a dsl connection.
I did notice that the pages that I was able to load, loaded fast. The ping
test had a faster response than my home dsl. When I go to a page that won't
load, it just sits there and tries to load for as long as 10 minutes. I do
not get the "Page can't be displayed" html.

I thought that maybe it had to do with the content of the page, thus I tried
going to Microsoft.com to update but that is one of the pages that will not
load.

Any suggestions are appreciated,

/ power up). No computer on our LAN could reach certain sites. I thought
it might be our ISP, etc. etc.

Pinging a site won't necessarily tell you if you can reach it or not.
Lately the ping response capability has been turned off for security reasons
on many web sites. So, you *will* get "Request timed out"

What security is set up? Is something restricting those sites from access -
such as a firewall or a similar setting in the router?

I disabled the firewall on the router and also checked to make certain

that no restrictions were in place. I also lowered the security settings on
IE6. I did reboot the router.

The one item that was screwy on the Linksys router was its inability to
chage to an auto setting for MTU. It is set at 1472 and would not go to
"Auto".

Report Back: I was at a loss. I did the only thing that I could think to
do. I reset the router to factory settings and then reentered all the
settings and vwalla, it worked. Darn routers!
