What's the real name of short cut files

F

Frank

I tried to copy a shortcut file using xcopy and had to add the extension
..lnk to the file name.

If I show the properties of the shortcut file it does not display the
extension.

My folder options do not have "Hide extensions for know file types" checked
and explorer does not show any extension.

What is going on here?

Thanks for any insight

The *.lnk extension identifies a shortcut. WindowsXP doesn't show that
extension even when you uncheck the option you referenced above. It
works that way because MS thought it was a good idea.

I found these instructions to make them visible:
What do you think.
I'd like the extensions to show in explorer at least.

Think I'd be asking for trouble if I did this?

Open RegEdit [use Start > Run > type "regedit" > click OK] Search your
registry "Data" fields for "NeverShowExt" [use Edit > find... in the RegEdit
menu]. That will reveal all file types that are forced to remain invisible.
Delete all the "NeverShowExt" registry value entries that you find. Close
RegEdit. You're done.

It shouldn't hurt anything. You actually need to search 'Values' not 'Data'. But if all you're
concerned about is shortcuts, only delete 'NeverShowExt' under this key:

"HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\lnkfile"

No, they're under:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\piffile
