What's the best way to add a caption to a picture in word?

I'm creating a handbook in word and need to include some photos. I want to be
able to add captions to label them as "Figure 1.1, etc..." so that I can
reference them in the text. I thought of using boxes, but that option is
grayed out. I'd really appreciate any help anyone could offer. Thanks

Are your pictures In Line With Text, or do they have some other wrapping
style?

If you select the picture and use Insert | Reference | Caption, you'll get a
caption in a text box. You may be able to group the picture and text box,
and this may be satisfactory for you (provided you're not trying to include
the captions in a List of Figures or the like). Another way to approach this
is to insert the pictures inline, insert the caption in a plain text
paragraph, then select both and insert them in a frame, which can be aligned
right, with text wrapped around it.
