Linking captions to text in a Word doc

Is there method of linking the figure number captions to the text in a word
document? I am updating user guides but whenever I add new pictures or screen
shots with a new caption I have to manually update the references to the
figures in the text.

Can you help?

If you have not used Insert | Reference | Cross-reference to insert
references to your captions, then do so. If you have, then these REF fields
do have to be updated manually using Ctrl+A, F9.
