What's the best use of three PCs at home?

I've got a PC running XP and a Laptop running Vista connected via a wireless
network at home. My girlfriend has just moved in and brought her PC (XP) with
her.

I've heard people say that with multiple computers you can do things like
set one of them up as a server or set one up as a firewall or something to
free the others up and improve performance...

My question is, what is the best use of three PCs and can anyone point me in
the direction of some step-by-step guidance that will help?

Thanks

I would just set it up as three computers tied to the wireless local lan. You will be able
to transfer files back and forth, etc.

Then when the GirlFriend leaves with her computer, theres nothing to undo.

I agree too. I have 3 at home and we treat each as a stand alone with
AV and firewalls on each. That way only one needs to be on at a time.
But we do stockpile photos on one and use it as a server (if you want
to call it that). Its just a pier to pier network share, but it works.

"Pier to pier" sounds like a harbour cruise to me. :)

Step 1 is to decide what you're trying to accomplish. What performance
are you trying to improve?

Random advice won't help you do what you want, but will help you
spend money you don't need to...

If it were me, I'd turn off all three and spend some quality time with
the GF.
