I've given up on Compaq's and I would like some ideas on a new computer. What
do you think are the best? I've heard Dell were pretty good computers and
also Gateway.

A Ford Mstang is a good car.
A Chevrolet Corvette is a good car.
A BMW Z4 is a good car.
A Porsche Boxter is a good car.
A Porsche 911 is a better car.
A Ferrrari 460 Modena is a good car.

All the above a wrong statements: all of these are 'sports' cars and
absolutely useless for a fgamily of 4 people to travel any distance at all.

Same goes when describing PCs.

Do you need a portable or a desktop?
What applications will you be using? [Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher,
Quickbooks, Lotus Notes]
What business applications will you use? [MySAP, Quckbooks, MYOB, Microsoft
Money]
Do you intend to watch DVD movies or burn your own recordings onto DVD or VCD?
Do you play games?

Once you determine the answers to the above, you will have a
'specification'. This will assist you to determine how big a hard drive, if
youneed DVD or DVD Burner, how fast your Graphics Card should be and how much
memory, How Powerful your CPU will be and how much memory you'll need.

All the big brands and 'white box' manufacturers build system to a price /
performance model. Budget boxes [with or without screens, keyboards etc] to
top end performance solutions.

Determine where in the range you are, with heavy gaming or / database /
financial applications dragging you up to higher performance CPU and / or
graphics, whereas basic internet and email allows you to buy in at the
'budget' models.
