everytime i go to send a message through windows mail it say error check for
right server. I tried sending myself an email to my yahoo account to find
out my windows mail address. I've never used anything but yahoo. But, i
think i'd like windows mail better.

US-based free Yahoo accounts have webmail access only, no POP access.
Windows Mail handles POP mail but not Yahoo webmail.
Yahoo's solution is to pay them for premium "Mail Plus" service:
http://help.yahoo.com/l/us/yahoo/mail/original/mailplus/overview/index.html
and use the special settings for that service:
http://help.yahoo.com/l/us/yahoo/mail/original/mailplus/pop/pop-14.html

If you are OK with using a non-Yahoo email address, you have these other
solutions that will work with Windows Mail:
* Use the email address assigned to you by your ISP.
* Use a free Gmail, AOL, or Hotmail/Live account.

You can also continue to use Yahoo's webmail: http://mail.yahoo.com
If you need more help with any of these solutions, just ask.

I only use yahoo for my email also. Gary is correct if you keep yahoo you'll
have to sign up for "Mail Plus". I found a tutorial that walked me through
setting up Windows Mail using yahoo-mail plus, gmail, aol, hotmail etc..
Hope this is helpful. The site is "vista4beginners.com/email" I was able to
set up my Windows Mail. Good Luck

By any chance do you know how to turn Microsoft mail off? I do not want to
use it but everytime I try and send something from my computer Microsoft mail
comes up.

What program do you normally use to send email?
You need to make sure that your program is the default email program.

Windows Mail will pop up when clicking on MailTo links on a web page
as long as it is set as the default email service under Vista.
I can only help you if you tell me what your normal or preferred method
for sending email is.
