What's asked for when upgrading?

Greetings ...

My computer (e-machines) only came with restore disks, not an actual Windows
ME CD. Can I use the upgrade version of XP to upgrade my system, or will it
ask me to insert an ME CD? I do have the Windows ME product key, if it
matters.

What's the easiest way to upgrade in this situation?

It needs an me cd or me to be installed already.
Note: if me is installed already and you have no me disk, once xp is
installed and me is gone you won't ever be able to reinstall xp as your
qualifing media is gone. Best to just get the full install. This is one
reason why your oem windows me version was cheaper than retail versions.

You can use the upgrade version and it will "see" your copy of ME. If it is
installed and running it won't ask for the disk. Be sure you properly prepare
to upgrade esp. run the compatability wizard and use the info to get any
upgraded drivers or software needed and, for God's sake back up anything you
can't afford to lose...just in case. Remember that while you can do a clean
install with an upgrade CD(if it becomes necessary), you must then have the
install CD for a qualifying version of Windows.

When upgrading you are asked to insert an upgradeable product cd such as ME,
98, 98SE, etc having the product key for ME will do you no good. Clean
installs are always the best way to go, maybe you could borrow someone's cd.

When upgrading a existing installation of ME you will NOT be asked to insert
a qualifying disk; when doing a clean install you will.

If ME is installed on your machine, then that is all that is needed. If
it's not installed, then you must have the ME CD to verify a valid
product for the upgrade.

You can upgrade "within" Win ME since you only have a recovery disk. That
is, while Win ME is running, insert your XP Upgrade Cd in the tray and run
setup. This way, it will not ask you to provide proof of 'qualifying' OS,
because your qualifying OS is already running.

It will be quite happy if you run the XP UPgrade CD from the present ME
system. That makes the check, on the installed software, immediately.
While I would continue with Upgrade, you can then change Upgrade to New
INstall, and when it asks where, hit ESC to delete the current partition
