What's a Thicket?

Sometimes I get these weird files in my webs that have nothing in them. When I try to delete them, I get a message saying I cannot delete the file because it is part of the thicket. What's up with that?
 
Windows Explorer Tools Folder Options View - Manage Files as pairs and unselect it
