What would cause a replication of the text in a text box?

A colleague is experiencing an apparent duplication of the text within a text
box, but has no shadow options selectied.
 
What happens when one set of text is deleted? Also, which version of PowerPoint is your friend using?

A colleague is experiencing an apparent duplication of the text within a text
box, but has no shadow options selectied.
 
Powerpoint 2003. There is no option to select one from another. It looks like
it is creating a shadow as it is staggered, but I checked her settings. She
sent a slide from the presentation for me to look at and I can't replicate
her issue.
