What was wrong with my monitor

Few days ago my monitor started emitting smoke! But I closed the power
immediately and a couple of days later the service guy from LG fixed the
monitor and now its working.

However he seemed relucatant to tell me the cause of the problem, just
saying this 'happens'.
Can someone tell me possible cause of the fault? based on the parts that
were changed by the service..
Three parts were changed in the monitor ( according to the bill ) -

When I am using the monitor I keep changing the
brightness/contrast/temperature settings of the monitor , using the
buttons on the front of the monitor. I also rotate the monitor a lot Could
these be the cause ?


And can someone give me general tips for CRT monitors ? Like should they
be switched off after they have run for a few hours? is it a bad idea to
close the monitor for 10 seconds etc etc ..

That will not cause any problems.



Not really. It is conceivable that an existing dry joint could be
exacerbated my
movement of the monitor, but it won't cause it.


No, not unless you intend to leave it off for some time. Power cycling
causes most
failures.

If by "close" you mean full power off at the mains switch then that is
probably not
a good idea. If it is just going into standby then no problem.

I think I know the problem now..
I like to rotate my monitor a lot(facing chair/facing bed) ,
now if the monitor is rotated without powering it off,
then you get those purple colours (magnetic effect) .
So I used to switch off the monitor, wait for 5 sec, rotate it, then
switch it on again. This repeated powering off and on (power cycling )
must have have an adverse effect on the monitor..

well no more powering off the monitor for me!

Look for a "Degauss" option to eliminate the purple color,
this way you will not have to power your monitor on and off
to get rid of the color change when you move the monitor.

oh I don't know about degaussing. The few times that I have had to do
degauss, it felt like a 'don't-do-this-everyday' kind of thing.
I can live with not having to rotate my monitor..I have just turned it
diagnally, so I can use from the chair and the bed.

It might be burnt if you leave in too long <G>.

One of my daughter's burnt the toast. When removing it she discovered
the scorched remains of a small mouse. If his friends were around at the
time I guess they got cold feet after that as they were not seen around
after their friend was cremated. RIP.

Just to confirm. A monitor that closes during standby doesn't count as a
power-cycle (switch off and on ) ?
