what version of .net framework to install

I was attempting to install an application, but apparently, it needs the
..net framework version 2. I currently have version 1.1 installed. When going
to the download page for the redistributable framework package, I see three
versions that are available: x86, x64, and IA64. I guessing that the 64
would refer to the 64 bit operating systems?? I was going to download the
x86 version, but then I saw that it needs XP SP2, which I currently don't
have.

You need to get SP2 to have 2.0 Framework. In fact, the 2.0 Framework is
part of SP2, so go get SP2 and you'll be all set.

I finally got SP2 downloaded and installed (install process took a very long
time to complete). If framework 2.0 is part of SP2, then where do I find the
installation file for 2.0? The application that I am trying to install is
complaining that framework 2.0 is not installed.

Framework 2.0 finally showed up for me as an available update on the windows
update page, so I will get it from there and install it.
