What update caused my system to die?

[Win XP updates]

I installed windows XP professional. It works. When I get
the critical updates I loose the function of IE and my
home page, IWON.Com does not display. NO errors indicated
except it doesn't work. Which update should I avoid. I
have followed the same path twice. Install XP use it.
Install updates and can't use it. Thank god for netscape
at least it works.
