I can't find the character, like a non-serif X, in the Symbols drop-down: is
it there somewhere?

This is available in the Verdana font, or Alt+0215 You can also use the
character map | Start | Programs | Accessories | System Tools |Character Map.
Does this solve your problem?

The multiplication symbol is at character 00D7 (Unicode) or 0215 (ASCII).
You can insert it in any of a number of ways (see
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/General/InsertSpecChars.htm). If you use it
frequently, you may want to assign a shortcut key, which is easily done from
the Insert | Symbol dialog (I use Ctrl+Shift+X).
