What to do if Bittorrent crashes and file is corrupt?

My computer locked during a bittorrent download. On restarting I got the
message 'bad file descriptor' and the download would not continue. Is there
anything I can do to avoid starting from scratch and wasting all the hours
downloaded before?

utorrent www.utorrent.com and bitcomet www.bitcomet.com have some options
that
get around such problems.

for example in utorrent the option in the preferences is "preallocate all
files"

its a much more advanced torrent client that bitorrent
