What software do I need so that I can preview a gif file?

I am working on a powerpoint presentation (2003) and I am having trouble
inserting Graphics Interchange Format files in my slides. I keep getting an
error message. I am using Windows XP and the Windows Powerpoint 2003. Any
suggestions will be highly appreciated.
 
What is the error message? How are you inserting the GIF's? GIF's are not
video. Use Insert > Picture > Picture from File.
