What software can't P4 2.4Ghz handle?

Someone I know bought a budget PC some time back. What
surprised him was that his computer couldn't run a piece of
graphic-intensive game that he bought for his kids. I think
the game was called 'Unreal' or something.

I don't want something like that to happen with my upcoming
purchase. Maybe I don't use some software yet. But I want
to know what software P4 2.4Ghz CPU with 256MB DDR RAM can't
handle excluding those server software and business oriented
software.

256MB of DDR RAM really isn't much, won't take much to bring that PC to
it's knees, swap file city!

The ability to play games is a function of your graphics card more than the
CPU. As such, you don't give enough information for your question to be
answered.

I would however STRONGLY suggest that you bump the total memory in you
system to 512 from your stated 256.
