Those are files for Windows Help applications. You read them with the
appropriate Help function.

Hi.
I have one more question!

I realise the same program exists in both C:\Windows & C:\Windows\System32
Why are there duplicate programs (eg notepad.exe / hh.exe / winhlp32.exe)?
Could I delete either one?

Thanks so much for your help!

You're welcome!

The files will be re-created automatically if you delete. Simply leave them
as they take very less disk space.

Thanks for your "welcome"!

So which place is for the placement of the main program?
Which place is intended as a backup only?
Is the "system32" folder simply to backup the program?

So which place is for the placement of the main program?

Both locations have notepad.exe. Windows folder contains hh.exe but the
System32 folder doesn't, in a clean installation.

The DLLCache folder, which is used by Windows File Protection.

No.

Thanks, Ramesh. I had often wondered (but not for very long) why
notepad.exe was in both %windir% and in %windir%\system32. ;-)

Hi Ramesh,

Through the years Microsoft has been pretty good about backwards
compatibility with new operating systems, no matter what anybody says. ;-)

Windows Server 2003 still has win.com for gosh sakes.
%windir%\system32\WIN.COM
