hi,

in win98 if I leave systray and explorer running the system still
operates, and I can then delete files that are no longer in use... i.e
identified virus infected files.

In XP what programs must be left running in the taskmanager in order
for WinXP to still operate.

The list of things running seems long and I have no idea what needs to
remain. Also, there seems to be a lot svchost entries, what are
those? and why so many?

thanks for any enlightenment you can give me.

Here are some other sites for common programs in the taskmanager. See
what each one is and then decide if you want it to start.

The operating system, should be booted into memory for it to be running.
Thats all! :-)

Most of them are needed. The Processes are parts of the system that are
operating. You can end things that are on the Applications page, other
than that end facilities through their own methods, eg an AV from a
taskbar icon and 'Exit'.

SVChost is the interface to a whole slew of service components of the
system. They get loaded in batches - hence the multiple instances.
Leave them alone
