What kind of voltage run through the 12 V connector to a HP 5470C?

12 V possibly you might answer, but there are four pins + plus the
surrounding metal. Which ones carry the DC and which ones are ground
or AC? My adapter is broken and I need to know, so I can cut the cable
(and keep the weird connector) and connect it to a new 12 V source.

If the adapter is broken, then just open it up and see which wires are
connected. Should be fairly obvious from the adapter circuit.

Of course, if it needs AC then you won't get that from a new 12V source!
