what is wrong when installing the error box appears

I'm trying to install office 2000, but for some reason when the installation
begins an error box appears and states that a file cannot be read....I do
have windows xp, on my computer..but I don't know what is meant by they can't
read the file...is there someone out there that can help me resolve this
issue as per I really would like to have office 2000 installed

If it's a file on the CD, gently clean the CD with a soft lint-free cloth
using wiping motions from the center to the edge. don't go "around" the
surface.

If it's a file on your hard drive, it might be in use exclusively by
something. Shut down as many applications and system-tray icons as you can.
