What is Update Manager (in WXP Control Panel>Program Updates)?

In WXP, the Control Panel has an item 'Program Updates' that opens to a
window entitled Update Manager. The tabs and texts in this window seem to
imply that one can set program names and then have an automatic check to see
if there are updates for them. However, there doesn't actually seem to be any
way to add program names. At this point I have only 'Sonic Update Manager'
and 'Install Shield Update Manager' on the list. Was this program put here as
part of WXP? Or is it perhaps only associated with Sonic (a program that was
included onboard my computer as one way to burn CDs)?
Can this particular Contol device be used for any other programs, and if so,
how?
Thanks.

It's not native to XP; it's installed by third party software to look
for updates for select programs.

Thanks Wes. It all seems a bit much for me. I suppose I will live with this
'program' and its interruptions until it becomes too irritating for me as
well.

Appreciate the references.

You don't have to live with the program doing something you don't want.
Open its Control Panel applet and click on the button to change update
preferences. Set to "never". Or uninstall it from Add/Remove Programs.

This program was preinstalled by your OEM (Dell, Sony, HP, etc.).

Thanks Malke. Right after I responded to Wes, I realized that I could turn
the notices off, and did! However, I appreciate that you responded, as I
might not have realized that I could do it.
