What is this little box on my worksheet?

Windows XP Pro

Often times when copying data from one sheet to another or when dragging and
auto-filling a bunch of lines of data I get this little box on the
worksheet. If you hover your mouse over it you get a drop down arrow, and
clicking on the arrow brings up a bunch of formatting options or error
options.

First of all, what the hell is this box? Why does it appear? What part of
Excel is it associated with? Can it be disabled? If I even knew what to
call it I'd do a search in the help file, but I don't even know what to call
it!!

Any help appreciated. TIA.

Its the new 'Helpful' Smart Tags I think, bloody annoying in my own personal
view, no doubt others like them,
To turn them off go 'Tools' > 'AutoCorrect Options' > 'Smart Tags' and
uncheck 'Label with Smart Tags' > OK
