What is the function CMOS battery?

Greetings! What is the function of COMS battery in the laptop apart from
keeping date and day function up-to-date? I think I need to replace COMS
battery. It is not available locally. Will it cause any problem if I do not
replace the battery? With thanks in advance.
 
Not really. It does store settings but the critical settings that used to need to be stored in older computers are worked out each boot anyway.
