What is the difference between...

Well, they use different protocols and ports.. and IMAP is a server based
mail store, similar to HTTP (Hotmail/MSN). Many servers support both types
of access.

These don't get into the nitty-gritty, but it may be enough to satisfy most
people's curiosity...
