Outlook 2003 download specific Received date range from POP3 (or IMAP)

I have an issue with Outlook and a POP3 that, as I understand it, can be
accessed as an IMAP account as well.

What I want to do is:

1) Be able to download (and remove from the server) emails that are between
a specific date range in the "Received" header
2) Leave other emails outside that "Received" date range untouched
(including leaving Unread ones as Unread)

From what I hear, SmarterMail 3.0 can be accessed by Outlook as a POP3 but
also as IMAP. After a lot of googling, it looks like IMAP is the only one
that can 1) download emails and leave on the server as "Unread" or "Read",
whichever their state was before the download (and POP3 apparently just
marks everything as "Read" on the server if you download it), and 2)
download mail from multiple folders in the account (ie. it can see all the
other folders besides "InBox," which apparently POP3 can't do).

Can I accomplish my 2 objectives using either of these connections (as POP3
or IMAP)?

As an aside, I was wondering what the common servername for IMAP is (like
how mail.whatever.com is the most common for POP3).

Thanks for any help, and for reading.

Yes, IMAP should do what you want. With IMAP, everything remains on the
server so it can be viewed and manipulated from anywhere. More info is

What is IMAP?

As to the server name, you need to check with your ISP. I don't know that
there is such as thing as a "Common" server name; in any event, its much
easier to ask and get it right the first time.
