Everytime I turn on my computer, I get an error msg about svchost.exe being
terminated because of a memory not being able to be read or something. It
gives me 2 choices. Hit "Cancel" to debug or ""Quit" to exit. I hit anyone
of those choices and it disables my computer and I have to do a cold boot.
It only seems to happen when there is a new update to be installed. Can
anyone offer a fix? Thanks.

Its a server of services.

It is also one of the most commonly named pieces of malware vecyuase it is so important to
the OS. Malware will use the name (or variations thereof) but run it from a different
location that where the OS runs the official version.

To be sure that your problem doesn't stem from malware...

Download MULTI_AV.EXE from the URL --
http://www.ik-cs.com/programs/virtools/Multi_AV.exe

To use this utility, perform the following...
Execute; Multi_AV.exe { Note: You must use the default folder C:\AV-CLS }
Choose; Unzip
Choose; Close

Execute; C:\AV-CLS\StartMenu.BAT
{ or Double-click on 'Start Menu' in C:\AV-CLS }

NOTE: You may have to disable your software FireWall or allow WGET.EXE to go through your
FireWall to allow it to download the needed AV vendor related files.

C:\AV-CLS\StartMenu.BAT -- { or Double-click on 'Start Menu' in C:\AV-CLS}
This will bring up the initial menu of choices and should be executed in Normal Mode.
This way all the components can be downloaded from each AV vendor's web site.
The choices are; Sophos, Trend, McAfee, Kaspersky, Exit this menu and Reboot the PC.

You can choose to go to each menu item and just download the needed files or you can
download the files and perform a scan in Normal Mode. Once you have downloaded the files
needed for each scanner you want to use, you should reboot the PC into Safe Mode [F8 key
during boot] and re-run the menu again and choose which scanner you want to run in Safe
Mode. It is suggested to run the scanners in both Safe Mode and Normal Mode.

When the menu is displayed hitting 'H' or 'h' will bring up a more comprehensive PDF help
file. http://www.ik-cs.com/multi-av.htm

I looked at the article you list below. From the command line I entered:
Tasklist /SVC and hit enter. A screen very briefly appeared and disappeared.
How do I get this to pause so I can read the contents?

Actually, that sounds like to entered the command in the Start > Run
dialog box. To get to the command prompt, click Start > Run and type in
"cmd." Press <Enter>. Now type "tasklist /svc" and press <Enter>.

Apologies to Pixels Peter for the slight hijack of your thread.
Hi Will
As the subject of svchost has been mentioned, I have already read the link
you gave above due to what occurred in July updates - current research into
svchost has been interrupted by current Black Tuesday.
I am trying to find a list of these svchost.exe numbers, to see what they
apply to. I have searched MS for a list - have not got round to searching
each of the seven I have in TManager at the moment.
An increase in their numbers showing in TManager, along with a load of CPU
guzzling xxzdump.exe things, was mentioned by a few immediately after
updates were installed in July - I was in that number.
Is there such a list, do you know?
