What is RC1 and RC2

D

DianaH

At first I thought the RC# was another name for Beta 1 and Beta 2, but now
I'm not convinced.
So ... I'll ask what RC1 and RC2 are. I'll assume they are versions of
whatever they are.
Thanks.

RC= Release Candidate. It just signifies that the beta releases are nearing
the final RTM (Release to manufacturing) version.

I'm still confused. Does RC refer to the software or to the people who are
getting it.
I'm not wanting to drag this out ... just curious ... so that I understand
what it means when I see it in other postings.
Thanks.

It refers to the software.

Release candidates are "milestones" in the progress of the project, and are
a name commonly given to major releases very late in the beta test cycle
which lots of testing effort should be focussed upon.

Release Candidate 1 = we think that this version is good enough to be
released to the world at large.. what do you think?

Release Candidate 2 = ok, so we were wrong about Release Candidate 1.. how
about this one?..

Whether there's help or not ... there's always humour.
You are all nuts (that's a compliment, by the way). Lollllll

Now ... back to the insanity ...
I have build 5384 (beta 2). Is that a later build (is that an insane
question) ... is it even close to one of the RC's ... whaddo I know?

Heh! That's funny.

Build 5384 is Beta 2. Since then there have been many interim builds
released. The last public release was RC1 build 5600, closely followed by
RC2 build 5744, which was only available for a couple of days. Final RTM is
build 6000. The lower the build number, the earlier the build, and the
further away from RTM (Release to manufacture).

During the development of an operating system, or a program, there are many
phases that are gone through. First releases for testing are often 'Alpha'
builds, followed by 'Beta' builds as progress is made. After the 'Beta'
stage, comes the 'RC' stage, which then leads on to 'Final' or 'RTM'.

Your version is aging rapidly unfortunately, and there have been a few
releases in between 5384 and RTM.. the beta versions, as you might know, are
due to 'crap out' early in 2007.. no doubt you will be looking to upgrade,
and judging by the price structure, it may be cheaper for some to buy a PC
pre-installed. This is certainly true for those who will want all of the
bells and whistles that a 32mb or 64mb video card and 256mb RAM does not
afford.

I liked Vista from the start.. the look and feel were/are good. I made XP
look like Vista using a sidebar utility and the Royale Noir theme from Media
Centre 2005, and it was all good too. One gets used to an OS, knowing where
everything is. I am having to learn again and in doing so, strangely, I feel
like I have let XP down.. I still have it on my system, and have to use it
for some functions pending the release of 3rd party applications I have
used, but Vista is the way to go..

Re. humor, yes, it is important, even in something like Microsoft newsgroups
where one is expected to remain professional at all times.. I think that it
is possible to combine both, and people should not take it badly.. light
relief is always a good softener, a smile or a laugh, especially when facing
the tide of technology.. I try to keep it as humor too.. the line between
humor and sarcasm is thin and, at times, the many personal struggles that I
face cloud that line.. I trust that I did not cross the line in this
instance..

Mike ... you didn't cross any lines ... all good. It was my lack of
understand that started this.

Thank you all for you input. I understand now.

Jane ... thanks for the explanations. I understood the build number but
didn't know what the RC stood for until Mike explained it in his first
response to my question, and until now didn't understand what the difference
between an RC and a beta. I'll be wiser the next time this all happens.

Now that I'm more inthe know ... is it possible to upgrade (used loosely) to
RC2 or is that not long an option? Perhaps, I missed that window of
opportunity. I only installed this a week ago (I put it off with much
trepidation), so I missed a lot of what's been going on. And so it would
make sense that I just got this thing working to a reasonable performance
level, yesterday ... but it wasn't without a lot of fight and struggle.

I'm afraid that you missed the opportunity for RC2, it was only briefly available for previewers.

The RTM version (Release to manufacturing, also called the Final or Gold version) will be released to businesses on November 30, 2006 and the general release to the public on January 30, 2007.

Thanks Ronnie,
I'll have to wait until the public release is in the stores.
I only have beta 2, build 5384 ... the RC1 won't install for whatever reason
.... it goes well into the install process, then blows up. I'm going to
reinstall xp ... as this version is soooooo painfully slow ... can't really
get anything done. Some of my software that I need won't run and a couple
of my peripherals are feeling the pain too. I gave it a good shot!
Thanks for the info.
