I'm having an FTP problem, as yet unsolved, but reading through other peoples
q&as looking for help with my own issue I hear a lot of talk about ping.
What is ping?

It's part of the TCP/IP set of protocols that your computer uses for
networking . Essentially it enables you to confirm that there is some sort
of link between your computer and a remote one either on your network or the
internet. This is a very simple protocol and all it does is send packets of
data to another network computer and measures the response time. If you get
a response at all, your computer can at least see the network computer and
the response time will tell you if you have a good clean connection or not.
Response times should be almost instantaneous usually-if its not then you
might have a poor internet connection or the net is very congested. To use
ping type cmd into the Run window, then the IP address of the FTP server you
are trying to reach. Your PC should send 4 seperate data packets and time
each one.

Ping
[[Verifies IP-level connectivity to another TCP/IP computer by sending
Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP) Echo Request messages. The receipt
of corresponding Echo Reply messages are displayed, along with round-trip
times. Ping is the primary TCP/IP command used to troubleshoot connectivity,
reachability, and name resolution. Used without parameters, ping displays
help. ]]

Ping is the first half of the famous sport family Ping Pong, but they broke
up recently. Ping has been making the circuit in the networking community,
while Pong has been seen in many of the game arcades across the nation.
