What Is "NTVDM.exe"?

This Windows XP Pro message is killing me! crashing me
out of all my applications with this:

"NTVDM.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close.
Please tell Microsoft."

Scrool down to "System Processes" and click on NTVDM.EXE.
