what is .msg

O

old guy

Recently I have received a number of emails with .msg attachments
(actually, some are xxxxxxx.msg.msg). A search of the web seems to
imply these are safe to open but I found one site that warned of
attachments within an msg attachment. Are these safe enough I should
open them without fear?

Why would you want to open them? Unless you are expecting
an attachment from someone, the proper thing to do would
be to just delete the message without opening it. In
reading your post, I think about the cat who just can't
walk away from the sounds coming from within the box.
Their curiosity forces them to keep coming back to look
at the box until they figure out how to open it only to
get eaten by the wolf. There are too many bad people out
there trying to wreak havoc among the innocent. Do not
open the attachment. Granted, if someone forwards an
email to you and they use a particular service provider,
the email they are forwarding may be included as an
attachment. My advice is to write back to the people who
sent you the email (if you know them) and ask them to
explain what is in the emails that they are forwarding so
that you can determine if opening the attachment is worth
the risk. Also, if you are using Windows XP, be sure to
download and install the XP Service Pack 2.

enough I should
Well, you are kinda correct. The msg-containing messages are FWD:
The individuals sending these has close to no computer skills and the
ability to fwd stuff to me is remarkable. I completely trust the
individuals sending me the attachments (likely email they have received)
but I do not know the original sender. It is not my curiousity that
tempts me but the desire to reward the senders with a response after the
long struggle getting them to even use a computer.
I presume from your response it is possible to get some maliti. . .
maleci . . . nasty attachments.
