what is microsoft excel , what is it used for?

i would like to know about microsoft excel what is it used for , how do i
use it ? i have been told that this is for office jobs . but i cannot find
anything that explains what is actually for or how to actually use this i am
computer ileterate so i have no ideas on wear to start so any information you
could give me would be apreciated thankyou

Excel is a spreadsheet application commonly used for calculations. You've

Excel = Spreadsheet
Access (this newsgroup) = professional database
Works database = non-professional database
Word = word processor
Publisher = graphic based word processor
PowerPoint = presentation program
Outlook and Outlook Express = communication programs
