what is maximum file size for excel?

Obviously the number of rows and columns provide a limit to one
extent.
But by adding pivot tables charts etc, one can generate quite a large
file.
How large can this be? and is there any way to ascertain how much
space each tab of a xls sheet utilizes (by bytes or % of total)

Excel is DEAD use Access instead
