I needed to install Java for ... don't remember what. It installed fine and
isn't doing any nasties to my computer, but every once in awhile i get a
java icon in my systray that will only let me exit it. I can't pin it down
to any particular program and the only folder I can find on my computer is
..java and it is empty (yes, I have "show all files and folders" turned on).

What exactly is java for and do I need to keep it installed?

Thanks for your help!

Many websites (or portions of) are programmed in the Java computer language.
Without the Java download installed on your computer you won't be able to
see these web pages.

Oh gosh! I am dense sometimes. When I first saw this, I thought you might
be telling me I asked a boring question and you'd rather be having coffee
than reading it. Now I get it -- java -- coffee. *laughing*. Good one!
