What is "default share?"

WinXP Pro - each of my hard disks, on the Sharing tab, has a default share
listed: C$ for the C: drive, D$ for the D: drive. What is this and what
purpose does it serve? I want, for security reasons, to remove all sharing
permissions except for the SharedDocs folder. Do I need to worry about the
default share?

These are built-in admin shares. They are hidden shares (indicated by the
$). They will not be seen when browsing the pc. They are only accessible to
members of the local Administrators group. I hope this helps.
