Hi All,

I need to know on an average what is the boot time for Intel Pentium IV
based system with Windows XP Embedded OS running on it for different size of
footprints.
How to reduce this boot time.

Boot times are can vary widely. Others in the NG will have different
insights and experiences.

Boot time depends on boot media, processor speed, bus speed, and image size.

If you are using HORM, the boot time could be less than 30 seconds
Booting a 256MB image from 512MB flash card could take a minute plus.
Booting from CD-ROM can take several minutes depending on image size.

To improve boot time without using HORM. First, select the proper media. CF
are slow, CF with DMA is a little better, USB flash disk are better still,
and IDE/SATA are the fastest. Second, control what goes in the image. Only
include items and features that are needed. Custom shell with shell
acknowledgement and Minlogon are a couple of features to consider. The image
features will all depend on your application.

I noticed an interesting thing recently: My recovery CD takes less than
1.5 minutes to boot but if I put the same image on a DVD and boot from
the same hardware it takes nearly 4 minutes.
